Modems allow computers to 'talk' to each other
across the telecommunications network. Typical applications include
Internet access, file sharing, remote access and other functions
serviced by additional software such as PC based fax systems and
voice-mail systems.
For most home users,
the standard, dial-up modem is a relatively easy item to purchase.
Once again, it is imperative to ensure that the modem is certified for
use on the Etisalat network. Most modems come complete with data
compression capabilities and error correction
facilities. Both of these features serve to reduce the time
taken for communications, file up/downloads etc. The standard modem
now operates at a speed of 56Kbps but it is rare that such modems will
actually connect and transfer at this speed,
even with simple compression algorithms. Connection speeds of 30K -
40K are more common (this is an inherent trait of the technology
rather than an avoidable difficulty). These modems serve the home
market well, providing suitable Internet; connection speeds for
browsing and email.
Leased line modems are used to connect two
locations on a permanently available leased circuit. Some leased line
modems will automatically dial up another connection should the leased
line fail. It is common for public ISDN services to provide backup to
leased lines.
Most dial-up modems are supplied with a
software bundle relevant to the type of modem purchased. The bundle
typically includes fax software and telephone software (such as a
hands free, PC telephone system). Other packages include voice-mail
systems, bulletin board systems and even fax-
back solutions.
One of the most interesting,
recent editions to modem technology was the introduction of the new,
international, V92 standard. Most modems currently support V90
standard. New modems will support V92 standard and some manufacturers
provide free upgrades from V90 to V92 via
Internet downloads. The principle differentiator between the two
standards is that V92 is a development focused upon the needs of
Internet users. It balances the available upload and download speeds
so that users can, for example send larger emails, quicker (at the
expense of slightly reduced download speeds). V92 also provides 'call
waiting' support, allowing users
to place their Internet session on hold, take an incoming voice call
and then revert to the Internet session on completion of the call.
Another very nice feature of V92 allows the modem to 'remember' the
parameters of each connection,
thus reducing the time spent by the modem 'negotiating' at the
beginning of each session. This could result in substantial savings
for Internet users, particularly users who log on regularly for short
periods.
Modems are offered in many derivatives to serve
different applications and often the same modem is available in
different packages (e.g. plug-in PC cards, external modems with serial,
parallel or USB connection and even PCMCIA cards for use in laptops).
Once again, it is important to ensure that the modem fulfils your
needs and that it offers the optimum connectivity type for your
equipment (internal ISA or PCI slot, parallel, serial or USB
connection or one or two PCMCIA slots).
